MAJOR GENERAL GEORGE EVANS BROWN Maj. Gen. George Evans Brown is the auditor general of the U.S. Air Force, with headquarters at Norton Air Force Base, Calif. General Brown was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1918. He graduated from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, in June 1939 with a bachelor of science degree and was commissioned a second lieutenant, Field Artillery Reserve, upon completion of the ROTC course. He was the ranking ROTC cadet at the University of Utah and an ROTC honor graduate. He received flying training at Glendale, Calif., and at Randolph and Kelly fields in Texas during 1939-40. He was then assigned to Randolph Field as an instructor pilot and, late in 1940, to the Boeing Aircraft Company, Wichita, Kan., as a test pilot. In September 1941, he reported to Ellington Field, Texas, as a bombardier pilot and was in this position at the outbreak of World War II. During the next three years he remained in the bombardier training program at Ellington Field, Texas, Albuquerque, N.M.; and Midland, Texas, performing successive duties as squadron commander, director of flying and director of training and operations. He was appointed director of training and operations at Buckley Field, Colo., in 1945, and then attended the command and general staff school at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He served in the B-29 program at McCook, Neb., and at Fort Worth, Texas, from August 1945 until October 1946. After completing the Statistical Control Officers' Course at Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., in November 1946, he was on inactive status until March 1947. From May 1947 until November 1949, General Brown was assigned to Headquarters Far East Air Materiel Command as the staff statistical control officer and the deputy comptroller. He graduated from the Air Command and Staff School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in June 1950 and was appointed deputy comptroller of the Wright Air Development Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In June 1953 General Brown received a master of business administration degree (with distinction) from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration, Cambridge, Mass. He was then appointed deputy chief of staff, comptroller, Headquarters Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and served in that capacity until March 1957, at which time he was assigned to Headquarters Air Defense Command, Ent Air Force Base, Colo., as assistant deputy chief of staff, comptroller. In June 1961, General Brown graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Fort McNair, Wash., D.C., and was assigned to Headquarters Seventeenth Air Force, Ramstein, Germany, as deputy chief of staff, comptroller. Ten months later he moved to Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, as assistant deputy chief of staff, comptroller. In November 1963 he was appointed deputy chief of staff, comptroller of the Air Defense Command where he remained until August 1964 when he became director of accounting and finance, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. He assumed duties as the auditor general, U.S. Air Force Oct. 1, 1967. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
