BRIGADIER GENERAL AARON E. JONES

Aaron E. Jones was born on Sept. 26, 1889, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated in 1912 from Kenyon College, Ohio, and on Nov. 27, 1917, was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Infantry Section, Officers Reserve Corps. He was called to active duty on that date. He attended 2nd Officers Training Camp at Leon Springs, Texas, from August to November 1917 and was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Aviation Section of the Signal Reserve on Nov. 27, 1917.

In December 1917 he was transferred to Kelly Field, Texas, and then entered the School of Military Aeronautics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in March 1918 for training as an aeronautical engineer. In August 1918 he completed his course and was sent to Brooks Field, Texas, as Assistant Engineering Officer. In September 1918, in addition to being an Engineering Officer, he became a student in flying and completed flying training as a pilot with the rating of Reserve Military Aviator.

He was ordered to Barron Field, Texas, in March 1919, and was Engineering Officer until April 1919 when he was transferred to Washington, D.C., for duty in the Office of the Director of Air Service. He served in the Requirements Division of that office until July 1921, and then was assigned as an Assistant to the Chief of the Supply Division, where he remained until October 1923. His duty with the Military Bureau began in October 1923 when he was transferred to Boston, Mass., as an Air Service Instructor with the 101st Observation Squadron, Massachusetts National Guard, continuing in this duty until March 1927.

He was ordered to France Field, Panama Canal Zone, that same month, serving there with the 25th Bombardment Squadron. In October 1927 he became the Adjutant of the 6th Composite Group at France Field until March 1930. During the entire period, however, he was attached to the 25th Bombardment Squadron for flying. Returning to the United States he became Adjutant of Wright Field, Ohio. In August 1930 he was assigned as Assistant Executive Officer, Air Corps Materiel Division, Wright Field, continuing in this duty until August 1935. He attended the Air Corps Tactical School at Maxwell Field, Ala., graduating in June 1936.

His next assignment was to Langley Field, Va., as Assistant to the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-1, of the General Headquarters Air Force. It was during this period that the organization of the General Headquarters Air Force was completed. In March 1939, when the expansion program of the Air Corps was initiated, he returned to Wright Field, Ohio, as Assistant Chief of the Contract Section, Air Corps Materiel Division, becoming Chief of the Section in October 1939. In January 1943 he was assigned as Chief of the Procurement Division, Materiel Center, Wright Field, which later became the Procurement Division of the Materiel Command.

He proceeded to Washington, D.C., in March 1944 and was assigned to duty in the Office of the Assistant Chief of Air Staff for Materiel Maintenance and Distribution, Headquarters Army Air Forces, Washington, D.C., as Chief of the Procurement Division.

He is rated a command pilot, combat observer, aircraft observer and technical observer.
