MAJOR GENERAL JOHN F. "JEFF" NEWELL III Maj. Gen. John F. "Jeff" Newell III is Director of Strategy, Concepts and Assessments, Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Plans and Requirements, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. He is responsible for developing the overall strategy for the United States Air Force, through concept development, wargaming, and assessments. He also oversees the CSAF’s Strategic Studies Group. Prior to this assignment, General Newell was the Director of Strategy, Policy and Plans (J5), North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. Previously, General Newell served in various staff assignments, including Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs for Asia, The Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., Military Aide to the President of the United States, and Senior Military Advisor to the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. He has also served as a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. General Newell was commissioned in 1986 through the ROTC program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His operational flying experience includes special operations and air mobility, with assignments in the MC-130E and the C-130H. He has commanded the 39th Airlift Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas; the 12th Operations Group at Randolph AFB, Texas; and the 374th Airlift Wing at Yokota Air Base, Japan.
