BRIGADIER GENERAL MADISON M. MCBRAYER Brigadier General Madison M. McBrayer is Commander of the 45th Air Division (SAC), Loring Air Force Base, Maine. Units included under his command are the 42d Bomb Wing, Loring Air Force Base, Maine; 17th Bomb Wing, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio; 416th Bomb Wing, Griffiss Air Force Base, New York; and the 95th Strategic Wing, Goose Air Base, Canada. General McBrayer was born on November 19, 1920 at Calhoun, Georgia. He graduated from Ringgold High School, Ringgold, Georgia, and attended the University of Chattanooga in Tennessee. In 1942 he entered the Aviation Cadet Program. He received his pilot’s wings and was commissioned a second lieutenant on October 9, 1942 in the Army Air Corps. His first assignment after flying school was instructing cadets in advance twin engine aircraft. He later served as a line pilot in the North African Division of the Air Transport Command and, after the war, was assigned to the Pacific Division of Military Air Transport Service. During the Berlin Airlift, he served as Operations Officer with the 319th Troop Carrier Group stationed at Celle, Germany. Following his return to the U.S., General McBrayer served in various assignments as pilot, squadron operations officer and deputy director of operations. In 1952, he activated and commanded the 26th Air Refueling Squadron at Lockbourne Air Force Base, Ohio, equipped with KC-97’s. His next assignment was overseas again in 1954 as a B-29 squadron commander with the 307th Bomb Wing in Okinawa. The wing returned to the states and converted to B-47’s at Lincoln Air Force Base, Nebraska, where he continued to serve as commandeer of the 370th Bomb Squadron. In 1955, General McBrayer attended the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base and upon graduation served as Deputy Chief and Chief of Training for the 2nd Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana until 1960. His next assignment was with the 410th Bomb Wing, K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Michigan as Deputy Commander for Operations, Vice Commander and Commander. The wing was equipped with B-52H’s and KC-135’s. After graduation from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in July 1964, he was assigned as Vice Commander of the 72d Bomb Wing, Ramey Air Force Base, Puerto Rico. He served in that capacity for two years and returned to the states in May 1966 to assume duties as commander of the 465th Bomb Wing at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. General McBrayer became commander of the 509th Bomb Wing, Pease Air Force Base, New Hampshire in January 1967. This assignment included a six-month temporary tour as Commander, 4133rd Bomb Wing (Provisional), Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, where he directed planning and controlling of B-52 bombing strikes in support of SEA operations. General McBrayer personally commanded many of these bomber missions. He assumed his present position on October 16, 1968. General McBrayer is a command pilot with 8,000 flying hours. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster, National Order of Vietnam (fifth class), RVN Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters. General and Mrs. McBrayer, the former Alice Kidd of Washington, Indiana, have three children, Gregory, Kenneth and Steven. (Current as of 3 October 1969)
