Brig. Gen. Chris Hammond is the Director of Remotely Piloted Aircraft and Airborne Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities (A2/3/6U) on the Air Staff. As the Director, he leads an A2/6/A3 matrixed organization that is the functional lead for penetrating and persistent multi-role RPA and manned airborne ISR capabilities. His multi-domain team implements ISR policy and guidance, provides functional expertise on RPA and ISR capabilities, and oversees the operational planning, allocation, integration and employment of current Air Force RPA and airborne ISR assets. He supports a 73,000-person intelligence and cyber operations enterprise with a portfolio valued at $72 billion across the Air Force.
Brig. Gen. Hammond received his commission in 1998 from the United States Air Force Academy and earned his wings from Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. Brig. Gen. Hammond has served as a Mission Commander, Forward Air Controller-Airborne, Instructor and Evaluator in operational F-16 squadrons and the U.S. Air Force Weapons School. Brig. Gen. Hammond would go on to be the Director of Operations, 16th Weapons Squadron, U.S. Air Force Weapons School, and the Commander and Leader of the United States Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron “Thunderbirds” at Nellis AFB, Nevada. Upon completion of the NATO Defense College, Rome, Italy, he would return to Washington, D.C. as a Senior Military Evaluator for Air Warfare Systems for the Office of Secretary of Defense - Director, Operational Test and Evaluation.
Prior to his current position, he served as Director of Joint and National Security Council Matters for the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations (AF/A3J), and as Commander of the 8th Fighter Wing “Wolf Pack,” Kunsan Air Base, South Korea. Brig. Gen. Hammond has accumulated almost 400 combat hours in the F-16 over Iraq and Afghanistan in support of operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
