U.S. Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Bernadette H. Avelar, a Grand Rapids, Michigan native and an administration chief with Headquarters Battalion, 2d Marine Division, participates in her retirement ceremony on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Nov. 30, 2023. In her 24 years of service, Avelar has distinguished herself through her many accomplishments such as advocating for female Marines to be allowed in combat arms positions. Avalar was the first female to be assigned to 2d Tank Battalion, 2d Marine Division in June 2012.
