Pilots leaving active duty have safe landing place in Reserve, Guard
A pair of F-22 Raptors from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, fly above snow-capped mountains. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many airline pilots were furloughed as the industry came to a screeching halt. Now that airlines are seeking to hire hundreds of pilots, those pilots coming off active duty can continue serving in an Air Reserve Component. The Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard allow former active-duty pilots to continue their military service while giving them a supplemental income and benefits should the airline industry experience slow-downs or set-backs in the future. Innovating strategic acquisition
The Air Force Civil Engineer Center, in partnership with the Air Force Installation Contracting Center, is streamlining contract acquisition, putting the federal government's bulk buying power in the hands of civil engineers. For example, AFCEC now administers the Air Force Roofing Contract, a series of 66 small business contracts with $325 million capacity for maintenance, repair and replacement. Since establishing the contract, agencies like the U.S. Navy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of Agriculture, and others have inquired about using the vehicle. AF Career Development Academy transforming CDC content, delivery to Airmen
With a charter to help advance force development and transform how Airmen learn, the Air Force Career Development Academy at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, has reimagined the service’s career development course (CDC) design and delivery model to bring it into the 21st Century learning environment. Using an approach to modernization centered on rapid curriculum development and agile curriculum updates, with an emphasis on tasks that are mission-focused, the effort ties to the people-first approach of Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr.'s Action Order-A (Airmen) and directly contributes to developing Airmen to ensure they are ready for the future fight.(U.S. Air Force graphic / Dan Hawkins)

The 1979 classic science fiction comedy, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” by Douglas Adams, provided the inspiration for a recent journal publication exploring the quest to understand the Air Force digital realm and its implications for the Air Force future. In the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Digital Engineering 'Galaxy,'" Thomas Lockhart breaks down the Air Force quest for digital transformation into three main bodies of knowledge: integration, understanding and cultural change. Key to the continued progress in the digital realm is continued collaboration with digital pathfinders, academia and industry, where lessons learned from others can act as a springboard for future efforts across the domain.
