The Defense Superior Service Medal was established by Executive Order on Feb. 6, 1976 to be awarded only to members of the Armed Forces of the United States who rendered superior meritorious service in a position of significant responsibility. The Defense Superior Service Medal is specifically intended to recognize exceptionally superior service, and to honor an individual's accomplishments over a sustained period. It is most often presented to senior officers in the flag and general officer grades.
