Later in 1941, the new development on the Hill was designated as the Air Corps Replacement Center, with the primary mission of training Army Air Force pilots. In 1942, the Recruit Detachment, San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center was activated. In November, 136 recruits arrived from Tarrant Field, Fort Worth, Texas, and became the first Soldiers to begin basic training at the newly activated detachment. After World War II, on 1 Feb 1946, the base had a new name: Army Air Force Military Training Center.
