48 officers selected for career field change Published April 18, 2012 By Debbie Gildea Air Force Personnel, Services and Manpower Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO - RANDOLPH, Texas -- Air Force officials selected 48 company and field grade officers to crossflow into the intelligence and public affairs career fields during a selection board held last month at the Air Force Personnel Center, Air Force officials announced today. The nonrated line officer crossflow program is one of several initiatives used to help balance the force, said Joseph Marchino, Air Force Personnel Center special duty assignments branch chief. Eligible officers in overage fields - based on grade and year group - could volunteer to retrain and serve in a critically manned career field. The selection panel, chaired by Col. David Slade, AFPC director of assignments, considered 78 officers for the program, 30 of whom were volunteers. In addition to accepting those volunteers, the panel identified 18 non-volunteers for the program. Of the 42 officers selected for the intelligence field, 26 of those were volunteers, and four of the officers selected for public affairs were also volunteers, Marchino said. "The crossflow panel carefully considered all eligible officers with the focus on selecting those with the highest potential for success in their new field," he said. "But career field health was a critical factor too. The panel didn't want to drive a career field into a position where it is under sustainment levels through non-volunteer selections." Members selected for crossflow have been notified, and will begin reporting to their new assignment or to training as early as June, Marchino said.
