More than 1,000 officers from 10 support career fields are on the calendar year 2012 squadron commander candidate list, Air Force officials announced Nov 4.

Functional developmental teams meet annually here to consider eligible officers for functional squadron command opportunities. Wing hiring officials, major command functional managers and Air Force Personnel Center assignment teams will use the candidate lists to fill projected 2012 squadron commander vacancies, with selected results tentatively slated for release in late January 2012.

"Squadron commanders play a huge role in the success of our Air Force today, and the opportunity to command is fundamental to developing our Air Force leaders," said Jim Playford, the AFPC assignment officer.

Not all candidates will get a squadron command assignment.

"The number of candidates typically exceeds known vacancies to account for a variety of unprojected requirements," said Playford. "All officers on the squadron command candidates list are considered volunteers for worldwide command opportunities, including indeterminate TDYs."

Officers who are not selected for command will remain on the list (unless removed for one of a variety of reasons, such declining with prejudice or removed for cause) until the following year's release.

Candidate lists have been posted on the Air Force Personnel Services website (search for PSDM 11-97). For more information about command opportunities and other personnel issues, go to https://gum-crm.csd.disa.mil.
