Throughout the five boroughs of New York City, Airmen are sharing their stories, and their appreciation during Air Force Week here Aug. 24 through Aug. 29.

The New York City Police commissioner, on behalf of the Mayor of New York City, proclaimed this week Air Force Week in a ceremony aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum today.

"New York City is the largest city in the nation and it's a great opportunity for people in the city and the state of New York to recognize all of our Airmen," Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley said during the ceremony. "And, it's a great way for our Air Force to reciprocate and say, 'Thanks' to the people of New York for all of their support."

Throughout the week, Airmen will interact with the citizens of New York City to educate them about contributions the Air Force makes to national defense. Airmen will participate in a number of events including exhibits in Times Square, park clean-up projects in Brooklyn and the Bronx, and Air Force night at a New York Mets game.

The theme of Air Force Week New York City is, "Honoring Hometown Heroes." There are more than 32,000 New York natives serving in the Air Force with 1,500 of them serving around the world today in contingency operations.

Staff Sgt. Mercedes Crossland, a native of Harlem, said this week, she wants to tell people Airmen do more than support missions in Southwest Asia, they also support their communities and their hometown.

"This morning the people in my neighborhood watched me in my uniform and everyone is so proud of me, said Sergeant Crossland, a public affairs specialist from Aviano Air Base, Italy. "It's important to share with the young people that no matter where you came from, you can succeed.

"I'm here to represent the Air Force, represent New York City and let everyone know this is my life. It's a good life and I've had a lot of fun so far," she said.

Air Force Week NYC is one of two Air Force weeks set to take place in 2010. The next Air Force Week will be in Cocoa Beach, Fla., Oct. 26 through Oct. 31.
