Air Operations in Afghanistan

Soltani
Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots provided armed overwatch and close-air support for friendly forces and a friendly forces dismounted patrol. Pilots conducted a show of force over a compound where enemy forces were firing against friendly forces. The engagement was determined successful when enemy fire ceased.

Asmar
Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a medical evacuation operation. One aircrew released a precision-guided munition against an enemy mortar position and eliminated a threat to friendly forces. The other aircrew released precision-guided munitions against an enemy position and destroyed it. Ground controllers declared the engagements successful.

Lashkar Gah
Navy F/A-18C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted a show of force that ground controllers determined successful.

Sangin
Air Force F-15E aircrews, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots and coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch and close air support for friendly forces. Coalition and F-15E aircrews conducted shows of force to deter anti-Afghan forces activity. A-10 pilots also conducted a show of force, with flares launched, and later conducted cannon-fire strafing runs and released precision-guided munitions to eliminate threats to friendly forces. On-scene joint terminal attack controllers declared the engagements successful.

Balocan
Coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces convoy. Aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter further enemy activity when the convoy reported being hit with an improvised explosive device. Ground controllers declared the show of force successful.

Qal-E-Naw
Coalition and F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces convoy that encountered enemy fire. Aircrews conducted a show of force and shows of presence to deter enemy activity. Ground controllers declared the engagements successful when no further enemy activity was observed.

Chahar Bagh
A-10 pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy activity, which ground control determined successful.

Airlift Action

Helmand Province
Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrews and a C-130 Hercules aircrew flew combat-airdrop missions in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 298,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.
