Air Operations in Afghanistan

Close-Air Support

Mushan
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots were passed coordinates for an enemy position and released a precision-guided munition, which eliminated the enemy position. On-scene joint terminal attack controllers called the engagement successful.

Kandahar
A-10 pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots coordinated with coalition JTACs to eliminate an enemy position that presented a threat to friendly forces. Precision-guided munitions were released against the enemy position and destroyed it. The pilots also conducted a show of force to deter any enemy action in the area.

Bari Kowt
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews and an Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrew provided armed overwatch for friendly forces during a military operation. The aircrews received coordinates for numerous enemy fighting positions that were a central hub of insurgent activity for the area. The aircrews released several precision-guided munitions against enemy positions, eliminating them and a threat to friendly forces. Ground controllers declared the actions successful.

Orgun-E
Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots provided armed overwatch and close air support for a friendly patrol. The pilots conducted a show of force to deter enemy action and break contact with enemy forces when the patrol took brief enemy fire. Ground controllers declared the action successful.

Shahidan
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces patrol. The aircrews conducted a show of force to deter anti-Afghan forces activity when the patrol reported taking enemy fire. Ground controllers declared the show of force successful when enemy fire ceased.

Sheykhabad
F-16C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted a show of force over a suspected enemy position to deter enemy action.

Abchakan
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter ant-Afghan forces. Ground controllers declared the actions successful.

Lashkar Gah
Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots and F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots and aircrews conducted shows of presence then a show of force to deter enemy forces from firing on friendly forces. Ground controllers declared the actions successful.

Almar
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of presence, which ground controllers called successful.

Helmand Province
An Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, delivering 88,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Paktika Province
An Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, delivering 30,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Zabul Province
A C-17 aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 69,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Badghis Province
