May 8 airpower summary Published May 11, 2010 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations May 8 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air Operations in Afghanistan Close-Air Support Lashkar Gah Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. On-scene joint terminal attack controllers directed the aircrews to coordinates of two booby-trapped buildings laden with house-borne improvised explosive devices. After ground forces evacuated surrounding structures, the aircrews released precision-guided munitions against the targets and successfully destroyed the buildings eliminating Surkhabad Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to break contact with and deter enemy fire against friendly forces. When enemy fire resumed, the pilots conducted cannon-fire strafing runs against enemy positions and stopped enemy fire. JTACs declared all actions successful. Gereshk A-10 pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, and a cannon-fire strafing run to deter enemy activity. Airlift Action Zabul Province Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrews flew combat-airdrop missions in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 42,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces. Badghis Province An Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Badghis Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 38,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.
