Air Operations in Afghanistan

Close-Air Support

Konduz
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews released precision-guided munitions at an anti-Afghan forces vehicle to counter threats to friendly forces. The actions were confirmed successful by on-scene joint terminal attack controllers.

Asmar
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Friendly forces reported receiving enemy fire and passed confirmed enemy position coordinates to the aircraft.  The aircrews released precision-guided munitions against enemy targets and neutralized them. Ground controllers confirmed the actions successful when enemy fire ceased.

Abchakan
Coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces patrol hit by an improvised explosive device. The aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter further enemy action in the area. Ground controllers declared the show of force successful when there was no further action.

Asadabad
Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots and F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly-forces convoy. The pilots and aircrews coordinated with JTACs and ground controllers to suppress and terminate enemy fire against the friendly forces. Precision-guided munitions were released and engagements were declared successful when the enemy positions were destroyed.

Chahar Bagh
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted a show of force, with flares launched, over an enemy firing point to deter enemy aggression. The show of force was confirmed successful by JTACs.

Mazar
F-15E aircrews provided close air support and armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to deter possible enemy action. The shows of force were confirmed successful by ground controllers.

Bagram
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force to deter enemy fire against friendly forces. The show of force was confirmed successful by ground controllers.

Kandahar
Coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted shows of force to prevent the possibility of an ambush of a friendly-forces patrol.  Improvised explosive devices were discovered at the ambush site after the shows of force dispersed enemy forces. The shows of force were confirmed successful by ground controllers.

Airlift Action

Farah Province
Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrews flew combat-airdrop missions in Farah Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 12,000 pounds and 24,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Helmand Province
An Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 60,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Zabul Province
A C-130 aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 18,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Oruzgan Province
A C-130 aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 21,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Nimroz Province
A C-17 aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Nimroz Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 60,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.
