Close-Air Support

Konduz
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews, a B-1B Lancer aircrew and F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and coalition forces. Coalition forces reported receiving enemy small-arms fire, and F-15E aircrews conducted a requested show of force, with flares launched, to deter anti-Afghan forces activity in the area. The B-1B aircrew replaced the F-15E aircrews and released a precision-guided munition, which ended enemy fire, and then conducted a show of force to deter further enemy aggression against friendly forces. The F-16C pilots replaced the B-1B aircrew and conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy action at a possible enemy mortar-team position. The shows of force were all confirmed successful by ground controllers and on-scene joint terminal attack controllers.

Ali Kheyl
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces dismounted patrol. The aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to break contact with enemy forces when the dismounted patrol received enemy fire. The show of force was confirmed successful by JTACs. The aircrews then escorted the dismounted patrol to its destination.

Morghab
Air Force MQ-9A Reaper operators provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The operators observed enemy forces firing against friendly forces and fired a missile against the enemy fighting position, eliminating the enemy position and stopping enemy fire. In the meantime, B-1B aircrews provided armed overwatch for several convoys. The aircrews conducted shows of presence and force over suspicious activity on a ridgeline near a friendly-forces convoy. Ground controllers reported both actions successful.

Gereshk
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted a show of force, with flares launched, when friendly forces received sporadic enemy small-arms fire. The show of force was declared successful by ground controllers once enemy fire ceased.

Lashkar Gah
Coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for coalition forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, over the area to deter possible enemy action. The show of force was confirmed successful by ground controllers.

Kandahar
A-10 pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy aggression along a road. The show of force was confirmed successful by ground controllers.

An Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Badghis Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 30,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Zabul Province
A C-130 aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 30,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Paktika Province
An U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 70,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Helmand Province
A C-130 aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 17,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.
