Air Operations in Afghanistan

Close-Air Support

Chahar Bagh
Coalition operators provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When friendly forces reported taking enemy fire, operators observed suspicious activity, which confirmed the location of enemy fire. Operators released a missile, which successfully ended enemy fire against friendly forces. Later, more enemy fire was reported by friendly forces and suspicious activity was observed at another position. Operators released another missile and successfully halted enemy fire.     

Asadabad
Air Force MQ-9A Reaper operators provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces operation. Operators observed enemy forces gathering to engage friendly forces and released a precision-guided munition against the enemy location. The weapons release eliminated an imminent threat to the friendly forces.

Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces operation. When friendly forces observed enemy forces gathering, the enemy's position was confirmed and precision-guided munitions were released against the enemy position. The weapons release destroyed the enemy position and eliminated a threat to the friendly forces operation.

F-15E aircrews conducted a show of force to deter anti-Afghan activity. Ground commanders confirmed the show of force successful. 

Tarin Kowt
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and conducted a show of force that was declared successful by ground controllers. However, a short time later, friendly forces reported further enemy small-arms fire. Pilots conducted several more shows of force, some with flares launched, in the area but enemy fire continued. Pilots followed up with numerous strafing runs using cannon fire against the enemy fighting position, which successfully ended enemy fire. Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots also conducted a show of force to ensure against further enemy fire. The show of force was deemed successful.  

Qal-E-Naw 
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch of a large friendly forces convoy. The aircrews conducted a show of force to deter enemy activity in the vicinity of the convoy. The show of force was determined successful by ground control.

Tirgari 
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces dismounted patrol. The aircrews conducted a show of force, which was declared successful.

Farah 
A-10 pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and conducted a show of force, which was declared successful.

Orgun-E 
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces dismounted patrol. Pilots conducted a show of presence to reassure the patrol air power was overhead.

Balocan
F/A-18C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted a show of force to deter enemy activity. The show of force was declared successful by the ground commander.

Airlift Action

Farah Province
A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Farah Province, Afghanistan, airdropping 12,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Helmand Province
Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrews flew combat-resupply missions in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, airdropping 45,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.

Zabul Province
C-17 aircrews flew combat airdrop missions in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, delivering 36,000 pounds and 30,000 pounds of sustainment supplies to friendly forces at two drop zones.
