Air Operations in Afghanistan:

Close-Air Support

Lashkar Gah
Air Force MQ-9A operators provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and released precision-guided munitions against enemy forces planting an improvised-explosive device in a roadbed. Ground commanders declared the attack successful.

Remak
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews escorted a friendly-forces convoy and conducted a show of force, releasing flares, to deter enemy action. The show of force was declared successful.

Chahar Bagh
Coalition aircrews conducted aerial reconnaissance and provided armed overwatch for friendly forces on patrol. Enemy forces attacked the patrol with small-arms fire and the aircrews countered by with a show of force. Ground commanders declared the show of force successful.

Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots conducted shows of force in support of friendly forces advancing on enemy positions. The shows of force were declared successful by ground commanders.

Now Zad
Coalition pilots conducted a show of force in support of friendly forces recovering a stuck vehicle following an IED attack. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller declared the show of force successful. The pilots remained in the area and conducted armed reconnaissance.

Coalition aircrews also provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and conducted a show of force to deter aggressive enemy action. The show of force was declared successful.

Gereshk
Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and conducted shows of force, releasing multiple flares, meeting the ground commander's intent.

Bastion
Coalition pilots escorted friendly forces and conducted a show of force upon request of a JTAC.

Qal E Naw
An Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrew provided armed overwatch for friendly forces under assault by enemy forces using small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. An on-scene JTAC requested a show of force to counter the attack. The aircrew conducted a show of force, releasing flares, achieving the ground commander's intent.
