Airmen have opportunity to give

WASHINGTON (AFNS) --  Airmen now can contribute to relief operations for the Jan. 12 earthquake that struck Haiti that caused widespread death and destruction, according to Air Force and Office of Personnel Management officials.

In a recently signed memorandum, OPM Director John Berry provided guidance to federal agencies regarding support to Haiti in its time of extraordinary need.

"Federal workers have always shown their generosity when disaster strikes, and this time is no different," Mr. Berry wrote. "The U.S. Agency for International Development has recommended cash contributions as the most effective way to help."

Though the Air Force has opted not to run a separate campaign outside the Combined Federal Campaign, Airmen can assist with ongoing relief efforts in Haiti with cash or check donation to one of many worthwhile charitable organizations.

"We acknowledge the great work being done by Airmen assisting with ongoing relief operations in Haiti, but locally, they and their families can give a monetary donation through charitable and nonprofit agencies to assist in rebuilding efforts today and in the future," said Bill D'Avanzo, Air Force fundraising chief.

Airmen who wish to contribute can contact relief agencies directly. USAID officials have provided a list of relief organizations and further information on its Web site at www.usaid.gove/helphaiti/.
