Air Operations in Afghanistan:

Close-Air Support

Surkhabad
Air Force B-1B Lancer and U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When friendly forces reported an enemy attack with heavy machine gun and rocket-propelled grenade fire, the aircrews conducted shows of force over the enemy fighting position. The shows of force were successful in ending the engagement.

Balocan
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch and surveillance for friendly ground forces. The pilots observed enemy personnel shooting at friendly forces and conducted a show of force, with flares launched. The show of force was deemed successful when pilots met the ground commander's intent.

Asmar
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces protecting a town hall meeting. When enemy forces were observed in a sniper position, a strafing run was made that destroyed the enemy position and eliminated a threat to friendly forces.

Later, F-15E aircrews continued to provide armed overwatch for friendly forces. The friendly forces came under attack, aircrews were passed coordinates for another enemy sniper position and an enemy fighting position. A combination of precision-guided munitions and strafing runs were utilized to successfully quell the enemy aggression and destroy the enemy positions. A show of force was conducted to continue to deter enemy action in the area.

Asadabad
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch and area surveillance for a friendly-forces ground patrol. The aircrews employed multiple precision-guided munitions against enemy forces firing against the ground patrol. The weapons released were successful in stopping the enemy action.

Sheykhabad
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces convoy that had been struck by an IED. The aircrews later provided armed escort for another convoy and conducted a show of force to deter enemy action in the vicinity of the convoy. The show of force was successful as no enemy action was noted.

Tirgari
F-15E aircrews provided close-air support to friendly ground forces and armed escort to a friendly-forces convoy. The aircrews conducted a show of force, to deter anti-Afghan forces activity, which was declared successful when no enemy action was noted.

Gereshk
Coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force when friendly forces reported taking fire during an evacuation operation. The show of force was declared successful when no further enemy action was noted.

Lashkar Gah
Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted shows of force to deter potential enemy action. The shows of force, with flares launched, were declared successful when no enemy action was noted.

Bastion
Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly-forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, that was declared successful.

Airlift Action

Farah Province
An Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Farah Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 21,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.

Konar Province
An Air Force C-130 aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Konar Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 30,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Helmand Province
An Air Force C-130 aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 35,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.

Farah Province
An Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Farah Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 42,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.
