Air Force youth shoot for the stars Published March 1, 2010 RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS) -- Air Force Services Agency officials are sponsoring the Air Force Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center for eligible 12-to-18 year-olds Jul. 25 through 30, in Huntsville, Ala. "The camp is an inspiring week of fun and enriching space activities including Space Shuttle simulators and authentic astronaut simulation exercises," said Erica Mitchell, the youth specialist for the Air Force Services Child and Youth Programs. "It's a great opportunity for youth to experience the everyday challenges faced by astronauts and explore their potential as future engineers, astronauts, scientists, and educators," Ms. Mitchell said. Scholarships are available for 48 youth to participate in the camp. The camp is divided into two age divisions: 32 youths, age 12 to 14, will participate in the Space Academy and 16 teens ages 15 to 18, will participate in the Advanced Space Academy. This program is open to family members of active duty, activated Air National Guard or Reserve, retirees, and Air Force civilian employees. Airline and travel costs to the camp are the responsibility of the attendees or the installation's youth programs. All lodging, meals, and activity fees at the space camp are at no cost to attendees or their installation representatives. Interested youth with a minimum grade point average of 2.8 can complete a nomination form at http://www.afyouthprograms.com/spacecamp.htm and submit it to their installation's youth programs. The Air Force Services Agency will review applications at the beginning of May. Check with your local youth programs staff to learn the local suspense date.
