Air Operations in Afghanistan:

Close Air Support

Lashkar Gah 
Air Force MQ-9A Reaper operators provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly ground forces. Operators provided support on several missions, pre-scanning convoy routes, looking for IED emplacers and watching for suspicious activity in vicinity of friendly forces. When friendly ground forces reported taking enemy small arms fire, operators observed enemy personnel firing on friendly forces from a sniper position. Operators fired missiles on the enemy sniper position, terminating enemy fire and destroying the enemy fighting position.

Air Force MQ-1B Predator operators and U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly ground forces. The F/A-18F aircrews observed enemy personnel in a canal, ready to fire on friendly forces. The aircrews strafed the enemy position, destroying it and eliminating the threat to friendly forces. After friendly ground forces conducted a bomb-damage assessment on the site and were returning to their positions, they came under enemy fire from a nearby compound. Predator operators fired a missile on the enemy position, destroying the enemy threat to friendly forces. There was no further fire from the enemy position.

Asmar
U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews received orders to destroy two enemy fighting positions. When coordinates were received, aircrews released precision-guided munitions and the enemy positions successfully destroyed.

Sangin
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided close air support for friendly forces. When ground forces reported taking enemy fire from a tree line position, pilots responded with a strafing run of cannon fire. Pilots then conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to deter any further enemy small-arms fire. All actions were successful as no further enemy action was noted.

Bagram
Air Force F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force to deter potential enemy action. The show of force was successful.

Asadabad
Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces during a helicopter medical evacuation. The pilots received coordinates on known enemy fighting positions and released precision-guided munitions on the coordinates, destroying the enemy fighting positions while eliminating a threat to friendly forces.

Musa Qala 
Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided close air support for coalition forces. Pilots observed insurgent forces preparing to attack a coalition convoy that had been hit with an IED. Pilots conducted shows of force to deter enemy fire on the coalition forces. The shows of force, with flares launched, were successful and no enemy action as noted.

Chahar Bagh
Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircrews provided close air support for friendly forces. Aircrews conducted a show of force to deter enemy action. The show of force was deemed successful as no enemy action was noted.

Airlift Action

Logar Province
An Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a combat-supply mission in Logar Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 30,000 pounds of humanitarian relief supplies to friendly forces for distribution to local personnel.

Helmand Province
An Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 70,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.

Badghis Helmand Province
A C-17 aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Badghis Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 48,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.

Badghis Province
A C-17 aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Badghis Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 70,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces due to enemy threat preventing convoys from reaching the area.
