Jan. 23 airpower summary Published Jan. 26, 2010 WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations Jan. 23, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air Operations in Afghanistan: Tarin Kowt An Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrew provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for a friendly-forces convoy and patrol. The aircrew conducted a show of force to deter potential enemy action while a patrol traveled through a possible ambush area. The show of force was considered a success when no enemy aggression was noted. Chahar Bagh Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. First, the pilots conducted a show of force as soon as they were on station to deter potential enemy action in the area. Later, pilots were briefly re-assigned to conduct surveillance of suspicious personnel in the middle of a road and conducted a show of force to deter possible enemy aggression. The shows of force were successful as no action was noted in either event. A B-1B Lancer aircrew provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces patrol. The aircrew conducted a show of force to deter potential enemy action. The show of force was considered a success when no enemy aggression was noted. The aircrew also provided armed overwatch for a medical evacuation to ensure no enemy action occurred during the extraction operation. Surkhabad Pilots flying Navy F/A-18C aircraft provided armed overwatch and route reconnaissance for coalition forces and an Afghan National Army patrol. When friendly forces reported taking small-arms fire, the pilots conducted shows of force over a suspected enemy compound in order to deter enemy fire while personnel evacuated the area. The shows of force, some with flares launched, were declared successful when no further enemy action was noted. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. First, pilots conducted shows of force to deter a possible enemy attack. The shows of force, with flares launched, were considered successful when the enemy attack did not occur. Then, pilots provided armed overwatch of the area to deter any other potential enemy. F/A-18C pilots provided armed overwatch for coalition forces. The pilots conducted shows of force over an anti-coalition enemy position to deter enemy fire directed against coalition forces. The shows of force, some with flares launched, were successful as the enemy action ceased. A-10 pilots provided armed reconnaissance for friendly forces. The pilots scouted for any suspicious activity on compound rooftops. When suspicious personnel were observed watching friendly forces, pilots conducted a show of force and enemy personnel left the rooftop allowing the pilots to resume reconnaissance of the area. Sangin Coalition pilots provided surveillance of suspicious compounds and when suspicious personnel were observed, they conducted a show of force to deter any possible enemy activity in the area. The show of force was declared successful when the no enemy action was noted. Lashkar Gah Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier pilots provided armed reconnaissance for friendly forces. The pilots observed several individuals that were in and out of a compound several times, carrying items out and dropping them off. They were then tasked to conduct a show of force in order to deter the action and the show of force was determined successful when the personnel scattered. Shahidan Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for a coalition convoy. The aircrews conducted a shows of force and presence to deter any potential enemy action in the vicinity of the convoy. Both were declared successful when no enemy action was noted. Later, the aircrews provided armed overwatch for a disabled helicopter until relieved. Moqor U.S. Navy F/A-18E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a coalition patrol. The aircrews conducted a show of force to deter enemy action while the patrol traveled through a village. The show of force was successful and the patrol returned to base without incident. Kandahar Coalition pilots provided armed overwatch for a stalled friendly-forces convoy. The pilots conducted a shows of presence and force over the convoy in order to deter potential enemy action while the convoy was stopped. Both were declared successful when no enemy action was noted. Air Operations in Iraq: Baqubah Air Force F-16C pilots provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces convoy. The convoy was enroute to a site reporting indirect enemy fire and the pilots were tasked to conduct shows of force to deter enemy fire against the convoy. The shows of force were deemed successful when no enemy action was reported.
