Jan. 20 airpower summary Published Jan. 23, 2010 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations Jan. 20, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air Operations in Afghanistan: Asadabad Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for a friendly-forces resupply convoy. The pilots were re-directed to destroy a known enemy firing position for the purpose of terrain denial. A precision-guided munition was released against the target and pilots and ground forces reported a successful strike. Kandahar An Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrew provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces. The crew was tasked with several missions while on station. First, the crew conducted a reconnaissance of a highway and a show of presence to reassure friendly ground forces the B-1 crew was on station. Next, while friendly forces met with local leaders, the B-1 crew conducted surveillance of several named areas of interest and compounds for any suspicious personnel and activity. Last, when a friendly convoy was struck by an improvised explosive device, the crew conducted show of force to deter further enemy action and allow friendly forces to secure the convoy. U.S. Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided armed overwatch, reconnaissance and escort for a coalition forces convoy. The pilots conducted shows of force for the convoy to deter any potential enemy action in the vicinity of the convoy. The shows of force were considered successful as no enemy action was noted. Qal-E-Naw Air Force F-16C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and escorted a friendly-forces convoy. The convoy reported enemy small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from personnel on motorcycles. The enemy personnel were next observed ahead of the convoy so pilots conducted a show of force to deter any further aggression from the enemy. The show of force was successful as no further action was noted. Lashkar Gah Pilots and aircrews flying Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II and U.S. Navy F/A-18Faircraft provided armed overwatch for coalition forces. The pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, when coalition forces reported taking enemy small-arms fire. The shows of force were declared successful when no further enemy action was noted. Balocan Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided armed overwatch for coalition forces. They conducted a show of force over enemy forces in a compound who were firing small arms at coalition forces. The show of force was declared successful when the enemy fire ceased. Asmar Air Force F-16C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and surveillance of known enemy fighting positions, looking for any suspicious activity. The pilots conducted a show of force over enemy personnel and the show of force was declared successful. Chahar Bagh Coalition pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots were also tasked to perform surveillance for potential enemy forces around friendly forces positions preparing for an indirect-fire attack. When small-arms fire was reported, coalition pilots conducted a show of force to deter enemy action in the area. The show of force was declared successful when no enemy action was noted.
