Air Operations in Afghanistan: Lashkar Gah Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Friendly forces reported a large crowd forming during talks with village elders about the alleged destruction of a Koran. The A-10 pilots conducted shows of force, with flares, over the crowd, which was acting hostile toward friendly forces. A second meeting with the elders and a third show of force with flares were successful in dispersing the crowd without incident. Marine AV-8B Harriers provided armed overwatch for friendly forces faced with a large crowd near their positions. The pilots conducted a show of force to reassure friendly forces in the area and the crowd that air support was overhead. The crowd was reported as non-hostile in temperament and did not react to the show of force. Surkhabad Pilots flying Navy F/A-18 C Hornets provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When the aircraft arrived on station, the pilots conducted a show of force. The show of force was declared successful. Asadabad Air Force aircrews flying F15E Strike Eagles provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When ground forces reported people conducting unusual activity inside a tree line, a show of force was requested to help determine if they were insurgents. An Air Force B-1B Lancer provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces of enemy forces planting improvised-explosive devices. The aircrew conducted a show of force to aid in a friendly ground forces withdrawal from the area due to enemy small-arms fire. The show of force was considered successful as the enemy fire ceased.
