Jan. 9 airpower summary Published Jan. 12, 2010 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations Jan. 9, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air operations in Afghanistan: Asmar An Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrew provided armed overwatch for coalition forces. Coalition forces requested air support when an enemy fighting position and suspicious personnel were observed nearby coalition forces. When friendly forces reported taking enemy fire, the aircrew received coordinates for the enemy position, then released precision-guided munitions against the target, which eliminated the threat. A show of force was later conducted to continue deterrence of any enemy fire. Qal-E-Naw An aircrew flying an Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft provided armed overwatch and force protection for returning friendly forces patrols. Friendly forces were returning from patrols when they reported taking indirect enemy fire. A show of force, with flares expended, was requested to deter enemy fire on the patrols. The action was deemed successful when all enemy aggression in the area ceased. The aircraft remained overhead until the patrols were inside established friendly areas. Musa Qala Navy F/A-18E Super Hornets provided armed overwatch and surveillance for coalition forces. Aircrews conducted a show of force and no enemy action was noted.
