Jan. 7 airpower summary Published Jan. 10, 2010 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations Jan. 7, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air Operations in Afghanistan: Asadabad Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces, and escort for a friendly-forces patrol. Later, shows of force, with numerous flares expended, were conducted to deter any potential enemy action while the friendly patrol was maneuvered out of the area. No enemy action was noted following the shows of force. Surkhabad Coalition aircraft provided armed overwatch and force protection for friendly forces. Friendly forces reported enemy forces in the area and a precision-guided munition was used to eliminate the threat to friendly forces. Shows of force were conducted near friendly forces to discourage enemy action. The action was successful as no enemy aggression was noted in the area. Chahar Bagh Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The ground forces reported taking enemy fire from a confirmed fighting position as the aircraft arrived on station. Once pilots received the point of origin for the enemy fire, they commenced a strafing run with cannon fire against the enemy position. The enemy position was demolished, ending the threat to friendly forces. A-10 aircraft provided armed overwatch and surveillance for friendly forces. The friendly forces requested a show of force to stop the insurgent fire. The show of force was successful as the enemy fire ceased and the enemy ran off.
