Dec. 27 airpower summary Published Dec. 31, 2009 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations Dec. 27 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air Operations in Afghanistan: Qalat Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided armed overwatch for a coalition forces operation. A request for support was made when enemy forces attacked coalition forces. Precision-guided munitions were released on the enemy fighting position eliminating the threat to coalition forces. Asmar Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces. They requested support after observing suspicious activity in the vicinity of the friendly forces. The enemy fighting position was positively identified and a precision-guided munition released on the coordinates. The enemy activity stopped. F-15E aircraft provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for several friendly forces convoys. Leaders with the convoy units requested support after observing suspicious activity at a known enemy fighting position. The enemy fighting position was positively identified and precision-guided munitions released on the coordinates. The enemy fighting position and a weapons cache were destroyed, eliminating a threat to the convoys and allowing them to pass through the area unimpeded. F-15E aircraft provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces. They requested support when they came under attack from enemy forces. Morghab An Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces patrols. Precision-guided munitions were released on the target coordinates, destroying the enemy fighting positions and allowing the patrols to continue with their missions. Shahidan Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons and coalition aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When the friendly forces reported taking enemy fire, a request for air support was made. When the enemy fighting position coordinates were confirmed, a precision-guided munition was released and destroyed the position and ended the enemy fire. The aircraft also were directed to perform a show of force to deter any further enemy action. The show of force was considered successful when no further enemy action occurred. F-16s provided more armed overwatch for a friendly forces patrol in the area later in the day. The patrol reported receiving indiscriminant enemy fire and requested air power to assist. The aircraft observed enemy forces going in and out of a compound to fire on the patrol. The enemy was too close to the patrol and noncombatants to engage with weapons and performed several shows of force, expending flares, to deter enemy action. The shows of force were deemed successful when no further enemy fire was noted. Bagram F-15E aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When the friendly forces reported taking enemy fire, an enemy fighting position was positively identified and coordinates confirmed and several strafing runs made on the target which destroyed the position. Several shows of force were later requested to deter any further enemy action in the area. The shows of force were successful in deterring any further enemy action. Tani F-16 aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When the friendly forces reported taking enemy fire, the aircraft were directed to perform a show of force to deter the enemy action. The show of force ended the enemy fire. Chahar Bagh F-16 and coalition aircraft provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces. The aircraft observed no threatening enemy activity in the area and performed numerous shows of force to deter any potential enemy activity. The shows of force were successful in preventing any potential enemy action. Tirgari F-16 aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Once the aircraft were on station, they were requested to perform a show of force to deter potential enemy action in the area.
