Dec. 22 airpower summary Published Dec. 28, 2009 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations Dec. 22 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air Operations in Afghanistan: Kandahar Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces operation. When enemy forces were observed moving to a fighting position, a request to deter the enemy was made. Cannon fire strafing runs were made on the new enemy fighting position, eliminating the threat to friendly forces. Later, under similar circumstances, A-10 aircraft conducted several strafing runs on enemy fighting positions to protect friendly forces operations. Lashkar Gah An Air Force MQ-9A Reaper provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces. The friendly units requested support after they received rocket-propelled grenade fire. The enemy fighting position was positively identified and a missile released on the coordinates. The enemy action stopped on missile contact. Musa Qaleh Coalition aircraft flew armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces. A show of force was requested to deter enemy action. The show of force was deemed successful. Morghab Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The friendly forces requested shows of force to deter any potential enemy action. The shows of force were successful as no enemy action was noted. F-15E aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a convoy. The friendly forces had recently taken enemy small-arms fire and requested shows of force when suspicious activity was noted in the area. The shows of force were considered successful when no enemy action was noted. The convoy reported taking enemy small-arms fire and requested shows of force to help them break away from the enemy fire. Qal-E-Naw An Air Force B-1B Lancer provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for a friendly forces convoy. When the convoy reported coning under enemy fire, a show of force was requested to deter the enemy fire. The show of force was successful in stopping the enemy action. Sheykhabad Navy F/A-18F Super Hornets provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Once the aircraft were on station, they were requested to perform a show of force to deter potential enemy action in the area.
