Dec. 7 airpower summary

Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Dec. 7 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

Air operations in Afghanistan:
Kandahar
Air Force MQ-1 Predator aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircraft was also providing reconnaissance of the area. When enemy personnel were observed digging on side of road to plant an improvised explosive device, a missile was released in a preemptive strike on the enemy position, eliminating a threat to the friendly forces.

Kabul
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft flew armed overwatch for a friendly forces convoy. Shows of force were requested to deter any potential enemy action as the convoy had previously taken enemy small arms fire. The shows of force were considered successful as no enemy action was noted. A show of presence was also performed to reassure friendly forces the aircraft were overhead.

Moqor
F-15Es provided armed overwatch and surveillance for a friendly forces convoy. The aircraft were requested to perform a show of force to deter any potential enemy aggression. The show of force was performed, with flares expended, and was considered successful when no enemy action was noted.

Surkhabad
Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircraft were providing armed overwatch for a coalition forces patrol. The aircraft were also providing reconnaissance of the area. When unidentified forces were observed approaching the coalition forces, a show of force was requested and performed, the patrol continued on without incident.

Sangin
Air Force MQ-9 Reaper aircraft were providing armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircraft were also providing reconnaissance of the area. When several enemy personnel were observed digging on side of road to plant an IED, a missile was released on the enemy position, successfully eliminating a threat to the friendly forces.

Chahar Bagh
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II and Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet aircraft provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for suspicious activity near friendly forces and a coalition forces patrol. When the friendly forces reported receiving enemy small arms fire from enemy compounds, shows of force were requested to deter the enemy action. The coalition patrol also requested a show of force to deter any enemy action while enroute to their destination. The shows of force were successful as the enemy fire ceased and further enemy action was deterred.

Konduz
Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft were providing armed overwatch for a friendly forces convoy. When enemy activity was observed in the area of the convoy route, shows of force were requested. The shows of force were successful in deterring enemy action in the convoy area.

No significant air operations were reported in Iraq.
