Dec. 2 airpower summary Published Dec. 7, 2009 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Dec. 2 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air operations in Afghanistan: Oruzgan Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft flew armed overwatch and reconnaissance for a friendly forces patrol. As the patrol was about to depart, enemy forces were observed in the vicinity of the proposed patrol route. The enemy forces then split into two groups for possible ambush attempt and a heavy weapon was observed in their possession. Precision-guided munitions were employed on the enemy position eliminating the threat to the friendly forces patrol. Surkhabad Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft were providing armed overwatch for friendly forces. When the friendly forces reported taking enemy, a request for airpower support was made. The enemy fire point of origin was confirmed and meanwhile the enemy fire ceased. On further checking, the enemy had vacated the enemy firing point, the decision was made to destroy the enemy position and render it useless to the enemy for future use. A precision-guided munition destroyed the enemy target. A show of force was then conducted to ensure the enemy did not return to the area. Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces clearing a compound. When suspicious personnel were reported in the area of the friendly forces and the friendly forces reported receiving machine gun fire and small arms fire, coordinates for the enemy position were passed to the aircraft. Precision guided munitions were released on the coordinate points destroying the enemy fighting position and allowing the friendly forces to continue with their operation. Asmar Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When enemy sniper fire was reported, shows of force were requested to deter the enemy action. A show of force was conducted and ended the enemy sniper fire. The enemy was observed moving to another location so another show of force was performed to continue the deterrence of enemy fire and was successful when no enemy fire was noted. Qalat A-10s provided armed overwatch and surveillance for a friendly forces patrol. The friendly forces reported unusual enemy activity in the area and receiving indirect enemy small-arms fire. The enemy was observed to be on the move and a request for the last known enemy position to be marked with rockets was made. The enemy position was successfully marked with rockets. Sheykhabad Air Force MQ-9 Reaper aircraft provided armed overwatch and route reconnaissance for a friendly forces convoy. When enemy forces were observed digging on the side of the convoy route, a missile was fired at the enemy position. The missile destroyed the threat to the friendly convoy No significant action was reported on this date in Iraq.
