Dec. 4 airpower summary Published Dec. 7, 2009 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Dec. 4 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air Operations in Afghanistan: Now Zad Air Force MQ-1 Predator aircraft flew armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircraft was called to backup a helicopter attack on an enemy fighting position. A missile was requested and then fired on the enemy location, destroying the enemy position. Air Force MQ-9 Reaper aircraft provided armed overwatch and area reconnaissance for a friendly forces convoy. When suspicious enemy activity was observed at an enemy fighting position, a call for air support was made. The activity was confirmed as an enemy mortar team. Coordinates for the enemy fighting position were passed to the aircraft and precision-guided munitions were released on the target coordinates, neutralizing the threat to the friendly convoy. Reapers provided armed overwatch and area reconnaissance for friendly forces. When suspicious enemy activity was observed at an enemy fighting position, a call for air support was made. The activity was confirmed as an enemy rifle team. The enemy force split into two separate groups and coordinates for the two groups were passed to the aircraft. Missiles were released on the target coordinates and neutralized the threat to the friendly forces. Asadabad Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft provided armed overwatch and route reconnaissance for a friendly forces convoy. While sweeping the forward convoy route, coalition forces were observed to be in danger from approaching enemy forces. Precision-guided munitions were released on the enemy position and successfully eliminating the enemy threat to the coalition forces. The aircraft then returned to finish the convoy escort. Morghab Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces and Afghan National convoy. When the convoy arrived in town, Afghan National Security Forces reported taking heavy enemy fire. Shows of force were requested to deter the enemy action. Initially, the shows of force were not successful, subsequent shows of force forced the enemy forces to scatter throughout the village. Additional shows of force were also conducted culminating in an end the enemy small arms fire. Surkhabad Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircraft provided armed overwatch and surveillance for coalition forces. The coalition forces reported suspicious enemy movement within a known enemy attack point compound. Shows of force were requested to deter the enemy activity. When the shows of force were performed, the enemy action escalated to possible enemy attack/ambush so a precision-guided munition was released on the compound ending the threat to coalition forces. Kandahar F/A-18Es provided armed overwatch and surveillance for friendly forces. When suspicious personnel were observed digging roadside shows of force were requested to deter the threatening activity. The shows of force were considered successfully performed when the suspicious personnel disbanded and ceased their actions. Air Operations in Iraq: Al Amarah F-16s provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces. When suspicious activity (possible smuggling) was observed on the local waterway, requests for shows of force were received. As the shows of force (some with flares expended) were performed, the motorboats beached themselves and the occupants appeared to throw multiple unknown items out of the boat. The smuggling operation was successfully thwarted.
