Oct. 28 airpower summary Published Nov. 6, 2009 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Oct. 28 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. In Afghanistan, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft flew armed overwatch in the for a friendly forces foot patrol in Lashkar Gah. The friendly forces patrol reported receiving enemy fire and requested airpower assistance to deter the hostile action. Aircrews confirmed coordinates of the enemy positions and conducted a strafing run on the target. The aircraft continued to provide ongoing surveillance for friendly forces and when the patrol came under fire again a show of force was successfully performed. Later, aircrews observed enemy forces approaching a friendly compound and successfully performed another show of force to deter further action. Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces' convoy in Musa Qaleh. The aircraft provided reconnaissance of the area looking for suspicious activity in and around the convoy route. When suspicious activity was observed, a show of force was successfully performed to deter possible enemy action. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided overwatch for friendly ground forces in Remak. The ground forces came under enemy fire and requested shows of force to deter enemy action. The shows of force were successful as the enemy action was terminated. F-15Es provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces foot patrol in Tirgari. Strafing runs and precision-guided munitions were employed when enemy forces were seen approaching friendly units, the action eliminated the threat. A show of force, with flares released, was then conducted as a further security measure. F-15Es provided overwatch for friendly forces in Asmar. Enemy forces were seen approaching a friendly forces position and attacked the friendly position. A precision-guided munition was employed on the enemy position that terminated the enemy action. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces' convoy in Konduz. They were providing reconnaissance ahead of the convoy for any possible improvised explosive device emplacers and activity along the route. A show of force was requested when a possible IED team was observed. The show of force was conducted and successfully deterred any enemy action. Coalition aircraft provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces' convoy in Morghab. A show of force was requested when unknown personnel were seen along the convoy route. The show of force was considered successful when the personnel scattered during the show of force. Twenty-seven Air Force, Navy and coalition intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. In total, 63 close-air-support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols. These missions also integrated and synchronized with ground forces, provided overwatch and helped to deter and disrupt hostile activities In Iraq, 26 Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations. In addition, two Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. In total, 22 close-air-support missions were flown in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt hostile activities. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Air Force airlift crews flew 157 airlift sorties, delivered 535 short tons of cargo and transported about 3,200 passengers. Airlift included about 75,000 pounds of aerial resupply cargo dropped over Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. On Oct. 27, Air Force HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters and pararescue teams transported 24 patients to coalition field hospitals from locations in Afghanistan. Pararescue team members aboard the helicopters located, rescued and began treatment to stabilize patients in the battlefield. The HH-60G aircrews transported these patients to field hospitals in less time than it takes for a civilian patient to reach emergency care by ambulance in most major cities. Air Force aerial refueling crews flew 40 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.7 million pounds of fuel to 155 receiving aircraft.
