Sept. 26 airpower summary: HH-60Gs transport wounded warriors Published Sept. 28, 2009 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Sept. 26, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. In Afghanistan, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons responded to a request for support in the Khanabad area where aircrews were providing armed reconnaissance for friendly forces on patrol. Friendly forces were moving toward an objective when the aircraft reported seeing suspicious personnel in a wadi next to the objective site. Shows of force were performed but did not deter the suspicious personnel. When the friendly forces reached their objective site, they reported receiving enemy small arms fire and another show of force was conducted. The subsequent show of force successfully deterred further enemy aggression. Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft were in the vicinity of Bastion and Surkhabad providing armed overwatch for friendly forces. The friendly forces reported receiving small arms sniper fire and passed confirmed enemy target coordinates to the aircraft allowing a precision-guided munition to be deployed against the target. Later, over Surkhabad, the aircraft responded to a request when enemy fire was received by friendly forces. The points of origin for the enemy small arms fire were confirmed and precision-guided munitions were used to destroy the enemy positions. The enemy fire ceased. Navy F/A-18C Hornet and F/A-18F Super Hornet aircraft provided overwatch for friendly forces at Lashkar Gah and Chahar Bagh. Friendly forces reported receiving enemy small arms fire and requested shows of force to end the enemy aggression. The shows of force were performed expending numerous flares and were successful in stopping the enemy aggression. In total, 82 close-air-support missions were flown in support of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Twenty-six Air Force, Navy and coalition intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. In addition, two Navy aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. In total, 24 close-air-support missions were flown in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities, and helped to deter and disrupt hostile activities Twenty-six Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. In addition, two Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Air Force airlift crews flew 157 airlift sorties 676 short tons of cargo were delivered and about 3,500 passengers were transported. This included about 100,000 pounds of aerial resupply cargo dropped over Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. On Sept. 25, Air Force HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters and pararescue teams transported nine patients to coalition field hospitals from locations in Afghanistan. Pararescue team members aboard located, rescued and began treatment to stabilize patients in the battlefield. The HH-60G aircrews transported these patients to field hospitals in less time than it takes for a civilian patient to reach emergency care by ambulance in most major cities. Air Force tanker crews flew 52 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.1 million pounds of fuel to 210 receiving aircraft.
