Air Force officials announce aerospace award winners

Air Force officials here announced Sept. 2 the winners of the 2009 Air Force Association National Aerospace and Specialty Awards.

The awards recognize professional excellence and contributions to national defense.

The Theodore von Karman Award winner for most outstanding contribution in the field of science and engineering is the Laser Joint Direct Attack Munition Team at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.

The Gill Robb Wilson Award winner for most outstanding contribution in the field of arts and letters is the U.S. Air Force Band at Bolling AFB, D.C.

In addition, five recipients are the winners of the AFA's Citation of Honor for most outstanding contribution by an individual or organization to the development of aerospace power for the betterment of mankind. They include:
-- the 4th Air Support Operations Group from Heidelberg, Germany.
-- the 11th Intelligence Squadron from Hurlburt Field, Fla.
-- the 703rd Aeronautical Systems Group from Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.
-- the Enterprise Operations Squadron from Chantilly, Va.
-- the 563rd Rescue Group from Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz.

The awards will be presented to the recipients during the AFA's Air & Space Conference and Technology Exposition in September in Washington, D.C.
