San Antonio families can share Thanksgiving with trainees

  • Published
For the 33rd year, San Antonio-area families can brighten the holidays for Air Force basic trainees through Operation Homecooking. The program offers local families the opportunity to share their traditional Thanksgiving Day with basic trainees.

Through the years, families have opened their homes to many Air Force basic trainees who are away from home for the first time. This year, about 4,000 trainees are eligible to participate in Operation Homecooking. Last year, more than 1,400 local families hosted more than 2,400 Airmen for Thanksgiving dinner.

Families within a 30-mile radius of Lackland may invite two trainees by calling (210) 671-5453, 671-5454 or 671-3701 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Trainees can also be invited via the Operation Homecooking Web site at www.lackland.af.mil/homecook.

Local area and out-of-town relatives with family members in basic training may make by-name requests. Hosts must pick up trainees at the Basic Military Training Reception Center, Bldg. 7246, between 7 and 11 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, only trainees who entered basic training before Nov. 17 are eligible.
