Oct. 28 airpower summary: Reaper fires missiles Published Oct. 29, 2008 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Oct. 28, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. In Afghanistan, an Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II fired rockets and cannon rounds onto enemy compound in the vicinity of Morghab. The mission was confirmed a success by an on-scene joint terminal attack controller. In the vicinity of Bagram and Bolocan, a coalition aircraft performed a show of force to deter enemies in a compound from using small arms fire against coalition forces in the area. A JTAC reported the missions successful. A Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet, an Air Force F-16A Fighting Falcon and a coalition aircraft performed multi flight shows of force to deter enemy activities in the vicinity of Sangin. The missions were declared a success by the JTACs. Near Kandahar, an Air Force MQ-9 Reaper fired Hellfire missiles onto enemy positions in the open using rocket-propelled grenades against coalition forces who were operating in the area. The JTACs confirmed the missions successful. An A-10 conducted a show of force to deter anti-Afghan activity near Nurestan. The missions were reported a success by the JTACs. In the vicinity of Sheykhabad, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles conducted shows of force to deter enemy activities and provide armed aerial overwatch to coalition forces on dismounted patrol. The JTACs declared the missions successful. In total, 66 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Fourteen Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, four Navy and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 47 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Twenty-eight Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, three Air Force and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 140 airlift sorties were flown, more than 600 tons of cargo delivered and nearly 4,200 passengers were transported. Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq. On Oct. 27, Air Force and coalition tanker crews flew 47 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.4 million pounds of fuel to 282 receiving aircraft.
