The commander of Air Force Materiel Command showcased the value of technological advances in supporting the warfighter through better integration and life-cycle planning Oct. 23 here.

Gen. Bruce Carlson spoke to a crowd of several hundred people from the information technology and management industry at this year's Capstone lunch for the Info Tech Conference.

The event was hosted by the Dayton-Wright Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. AFCEA is comprised of military, government, industry and academic representatives involved with research, acquisition and sustainment initiatives in information technology.

"The reality is we cannot execute modern warfare without a heavy reliance on communications and information technology," General Carlson said.

The general elaborated on how technology has both improved military operations to their current standards, and how technology is fostering further improvements in warfighter support. Topics he discussed included integrated life-cycle management, expeditionary combat-support systems, mission planning, repair network integration, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

The theme for the conference, held Oct. 21 through 23, was "Enterprise Support to our Warfighters." Other notable speakers included Sue C. Payton, the assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisition, as well as retired Army Lt. Gen. John McDuffie of Microsoft Corp.
