18 Oct. airpower summary Published Oct. 19, 2008 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations Oct. 18, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. In Afghanistan, an Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle dropped a guided bomb unit-31 onto hostile enemy forces as they prepared to ambush a coalition convoy in the vicinity of Kabul. Furthermore, F-15Es conducted shows of force to provide armed aerial security to the coalition convoy in the same area. The missions were confirmed successful by on-scene joint terminal attack controllers. In the vicinity of Bari Kowt, an F-15E dropped a GBU-12 onto enemies of Afghanistan who were firing artillery rounds at coalition forces. The JTAC declared the mission was successful. An F-15E dropped a GBU-12 onto enemy forces who were firing mortars and/or rockets at coalition forces near Gardez. The mission was reported successful by the JTAC. In the vicinity of Bagram, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs conducted shows of force to deter enemy activities. The JTACs confirmed the missions were successful. An F-15E performed a show of force to deter anti-Afghan activities near Sheykhabad. The mission was declared successful by the JTAC. In the vicinity of Kandahar, an Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon performed a show of force to deter enemy forces from attack as coalition forces transited through a restrictive route. The JTAC reported the mission was successful. Coalition aircraft performed a show of force to deter anti-Afghan activities in the vicinity of Delaram. The mission was confirmed successful by the JTAC. In total, 67 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Twelve Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, four Navy and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 41 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided over watch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Twenty-eight Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, four Air Force and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. Air Force C-130 Herucles aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 150 airlift sorties were flown, more than 520 tons of cargo were delivered and more than 3,400 passengers were transported. The airlift included approximately 61,000 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq. On Oct. 17, Air Force and coalition aerial refueling crews flew 49 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.7 million pounds of fuel to 283 receiving aircraft.
