KC-135 featured on NPR's Morning Edition

  • Published
JJ Sutherland, a Pentagon correspondent for National Public Radio, climbed aboard a KC-135 Stratotanker at McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., recently to produce a report on the aging aircraft for NPR's Morning Edition. Titled "The Stratotanker: A flying piece of history endures," the nearly seven-minute report includes interviews with the crew and with maintainers who keep the plane flying.

The in-depth report covers the history of the Stratotanker and the process of refueling another aircraft. The author joins the boom operator at the back of the plane as he refuels another KC-135 and an F-15 Eagle. Mr. Sutherland finishes his report at Tinker AFB, Okla., the depot where the planes are refurbished every five years.

The entire segment, along with a two-minute audio slideshow of photos taken by Mr. Sutherland, can be heard on the National Public Radio Web site.
