Oct. 13 airpower summary: C-5s resupply coalition forces

SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) --  Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Oct. 13, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, coalition aircraft dropped a guided bomb unit-12 onto enemy forces engaging coalition forces with small-arms fire in the vicinity of Kajaki Dam. The on-scene joint terminal attack controller reported the mission successful.

In the vicinity of Nangalam, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs dropped GBU-38s, general-purpose 500-pound bombs, and fired rockets and cannon rounds onto enemy forces. Additionally, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles dropped GBU-31s and a GBU-38 onto enemy positions. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

Coalition aircraft conducted shows of force to deter hostile activities in the vicinity of Kajaki Dam, Sangin and near Lashkar Gah. Several JTACs confirmed the missions successful.

A-10s performed shows of force in the vicinity of Soltani and Moqor to deter enemy activities. The missions were reported successful by several JTACs.

F-15s conducted a show of force to deter enemy activities near Asadabad. A JTAC declared the mission successful.

In total, 68 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Fifteen Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, four Navy and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons performed a show of force in the vicinity of Baghdad to deter enemy activities. A JTAC confirmed the mission successful.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 44 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-eight Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, three Air Force and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 121 airlift sorties were flown; nearly 300 tons of cargo were delivered, and more than 3,400 passengers were transported. This included approximately 24,000 pounds of troop resupply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews flew missions in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On Oct. 12, Air Force and coalition tanker crews flew 51 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.4 million pounds of fuel to 291 receiving aircraft.
