An officer was charged with the theft of a classified item, and an Article 32 investigation hearing began Sept. 30 at Minot Air Force Base, N.D.

Capt. Paul A. Borowiecki, a missile combat crewmember with the 91st Missile Wing at Minot AFB, is accused of stealing a classified missile launch control device in July 2005.

Charges were preferred against the captain Sept. 16 at Minot AFB for allegedly taking an item that he falsely stated had been destroyed as required.

The charges against Captain Borowiecki allege violations of dereliction of duty, false official statements and wrongful appropriation of military property under Articles 92, 107, and 121 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and also wrongful mishandling of classified items in violation of federal law.

The hearing will evaluate the charges and the evidence. Once complete, the independent investigating officer will provide a written report, including a recommendation as to the disposition of the charges.
