Sept. 24 airpower summary: B-1Bs bomb enemy targets

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Sept. 24, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles dropped guided bomb unit-31s and a GBU-38 onto anti-Afghan forces and fighting positions engaging coalition forces with small arms and indirect fire in the vicinity of Bari Kowt. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller declared the mission successful.

An Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped a GBU-31 and GBU-38s onto insurgent positions in the open in the vicinity of Kajaki Dam. The mission was confirmed successful by a JTAC. 

In the vicinity of Gereshk, coalition aircraft conducted shows of force to provide armed aerial security for coalition forces in the area. A JTAC reported the mission successful.

An F-15E conducted a show of force to provide armed aerial surveillance and deter anti-Afghan forces in the area. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

In total, 50 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Sixteen Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 21 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-seven Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. 

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 108 airlift sorties were flown, 537 tons of cargo delivered and 2,375 passengers were transported. This included approximately 24,000 pounds of troop resupply airdropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On Sept. 23, Air Force and coalition tanker crews flew 59 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.5 million pounds of fuel to 288 receiving aircraft.
