Sept. 15 airpower summary: C-17s transport troops, cargo

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Sept. 15, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Navy F/A-18C Hornets dropped guided bomb unit-38s onto anti-Afghan forces in the vicinity of Musa Qaleh. Furthermore, Navy F/A-18F Super Hornets fired cannon rounds onto a compound containing anti-Afghan forces engaging coalition forces with small arms fire. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller declared the mission successful. 

In the vicinity of Lashkar Gah, F/A-18Cs fired cannon rounds onto anti-Afghan forces. The mission was confirmed successful by a JTAC.

A coalition aircraft fired cannon rounds onto anti-Afghan forces engaging friendly forces in the vicinity of Shurakian. A JTAC reported the mission successful.

Near Qalat, an F/A-18C dropped a GBU-38 onto enemy forces. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs performed shows of force near Kabul and Gardez to deter enemy activities. JTACs confirmed the missions successful.

Navy F/A-18E Super Hornets conducted a show of force to deter enemy activities in the vicinity of Sangin. The mission was reported successful by a JTAC.

F/A-18Cs performed shows of force in the vicinity of Shurakian and near Lashkar Gah to deter insurgent activities. JTACs declared the missions successful.

Coalition aircraft conducted a show of force to deter insurgent activities near Tarin Kowt. The mission was confirmed successful by a JTAC.

In total, 72 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Seventeen Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, four Navy and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 2 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Thirty-one Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, four Air Force and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. 

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 67 airlift sorties were flown, 258 tons of cargo delivered and 1,928 passengers were transported. This included approximately 114,800 pounds of troop resupply airdropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On Sept. 14, Air Force and coalition tanker crews flew 55 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.2 million pounds of fuel to 219 receiving aircraft.
