LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN) --
Dr. Harvey Schwertner, a medical technologist in the 59th Clinical Research Division at Wilford Hall Medical Center here, was notified on Aug. 8 that his research poster "Association between Plasma Lipid and Lipoprotein Concentrations and Plasma Cortisol and Estradial Concentrations During Pregnancy and Delivery" won second place at the American Association for Clinical Chemistry annual meeting in Washington, D.C., held July 27 to 31.
"There is always a sense of accomplishment when your research is recognized," said Dr. Schwertner. "It is always a great honor to win an award, be it here at Wilford Hall Medical Center or at a large international meeting such as AACC.
"It is also very gratifying when other investigators compliment you on your research and when you see your findings leading to other research studies," he said. "Most importantly, I think that the award states something of our lab's capability and the quality of research support that we provide to others at Wilford Hall and to the Air Force."
AACC is the major international association for clinical chemistry and molecular diagnostics, and the meeting is the leading forum for presenting research on laboratory medicine.
When asked what is to come of his research Dr. Schwertner explained, "I think that the research has more application to cardiovascular disease prevention. There might also be some therapeutic applications down the road such as drugs which may be used in preventing and treating certain forms of cardiovascular disease."
