Air Force officials re-established human intelligence Aug. 14 as a core intelligence discipline to focus on critical Air Force HUMINT requirements.

It was marked by the formal establishment of a HUMINT detachment, collocated with the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency's National Air and Space Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.  Maj. Gar J. Lightner assumed command of Detachment 6 from Maj. Dianne Hickey during a ceremony held at NASIC.

"This detachment signifies another step forward in re-establishing HUMINT in the Air Force," said Maj. Gen. Craig Koziol, AF ISR Agency commander. "This is the first HUMINT unit in the Air Force since 1995, and our efforts are reintegrating HUMINT into the Air Force ISR arsenal to meet the warfighting requirements."

The Air Force ISR Agency was charged with re-establishing HUMINT in May 2007 as part of the service's ISR transformation efforts. This transformation, which includes all ISR disciplines, began with the realignment of the unit as a field operating agency under the deputy chief of staff for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance at the Pentagon.

An initial cadre of HUMINT personnel has been in place since November 2007, and new detachment will eventually transition to squadron-level over the next few years.
