Aug. 10 airpower summary: B-1Bs bomb enemy compound

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Aug. 10, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, an Air Force Reaper MQ-9 dropped a guided bomb unit-12 onto an insurgent fighting position in the vicinity of Balocan. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller reported the mission successful.

Near Malek Din, Navy F/A-18C Hornets fired cannon rounds onto Taliban extremists engaging coalition forces. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

An Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped GBU-31s and 38s onto enemy forces attacking friendly forces and an enemy compound in the vicinity of Oruzgan. A JTAC confirmed the mission successful.

In the vicinity of Nangalam, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles dropped GBU-38s and fired cannon rounds onto anti-Afghan fighting positions. The mission was reported successful by a JTAC.

A B-1B Lancer dropped a GBU-31 onto enemy militants near Qalat. A JTAC declared the mission successful.

Royal Air Force GR-7 Harriers conducted a show of force to deter enemy activities near Malek Din. The mission was confirmed successful by a JTAC. 

F/A-18Cs performed shows of force to deter anti-Afghan activities near Malek Din, Qalat and in the vicinity of Ajrestan. The JTACs reported the missions successful.

Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs conducted shows of force to deter insurgent activities near Bagram. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

F-15Es performed shows of force to deter enemy activities near Jalalabad, Ajrestan and in the vicinity of Gerdi. The JTACs reported the missions successful..

In total, 60 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Fourteen Air Force and RAF intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two Navy aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons dropped GBU-12s and 38s onto House-Borne improvised explosive devices near Khan Bani Sad. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

Near Samarra, a Navy F/A-18A Hornet dropped a GBU-51 onto a building with enemy combatants. A JTAC confirmed the mission successful.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 47 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-nine Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, two Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. 

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 99 airlift sorties were flown, 157 tons of cargo delivered and 2,478 passengers were transported. This included approximately 28,900 pounds of troop re-supply airdropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Iraq and Korea flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On Aug. 9, Air Force, French and RAF tanker crews flew 64 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.5 million pounds of fuel to 287 receiving aircraft.
