Aug. 4 airpower summary: B-1Bs strike enemy militants

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations August 4, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, a French 2000 Mirage dropped a guided bomb unit-12 onto enemy combatants near Delaram. Furthermore, French 2000 Mirages performed a show of force to deter enemy activities. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller declared the mission successful.

In the vicinity of Now Zad, Air Force B-1B Lancers dropped a GBU-31 and 38s onto enemy militants. The mission was confirmed successful by a JTAC. 

Royal Air Force GR-7 Harriers conducted a show of force to deter anti-Afghan activities in the vicinity of Sangin. A JTAC reported the mission successful.

Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs performed armed overwatch to deter enemy activities near Bagram and in the vicinity of Nangalam. The missions were declared successful by the JTACs.

Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles conducted shows of force to deter insurgent activities near Worzhanah Kalay and Kabul. The JTACs confirmed the missions successful.

In total, 45 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Fourteen Air Force and RAF intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, an Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon dropped GBU-38s onto a building that coalition forces received enemy fire from. A JTAC reported the mission successful.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 47 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-five Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. 

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 112 airlift sorties were flown, 311 tons of cargo delivered and 2,574 passengers were transported. This included approximately 87,000 pounds of troop re-supply airdropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Iraq flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On August 3, Air Force and RAF tanker crews flew 66 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.5 million pounds of fuel to 311 receiving aircraft.
