July 29 Airpower Summary: C-17s provide heavy airlift Published July 30, 2008 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations July 29, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. In Afghanistan, an Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle dropped a guided bomb unit-12 onto a compound in the vicinity of Ghazni containing enemy combatants. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller confirmed the mission was successful. In the vicinity of Nangalam, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs dropped GBU-12s and general-purpose 500-pound bombs and fired rockets and cannon rounds at anti-Afghan forces and enemy compounds. The mission was reported successful by the JTAC. Navy F/A-18C Hornets dropped GBU-38s on an enemy bunker and a tunnel containing enemy combatants who were engaging coalition forces in the vicinity of Sangin. The JTAC declared the mission was successful. Near Shkin, an A-10 dropped a GBU-12 and fired cannon rounds at enemy combatants and an enemy vehicle. The mission was confirmed successful by the JTAC. F-15Es conducted shows of force in the vicinity of Ghazni, Konduz, Worzhanah Kalay and Gardez to deter anti-Afghan activities. The JTACs reported the missions were successful. A-10s performed armed overwatch in the vicinity of Kalafgan and near Gardez. The missions were declared successful by the JTACs. In total, 79 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Twelve Air Force and Royal Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, six Navy and RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons flying near Baghdad dropped GBU-38s onto an enemy vehicle carrying weapons. The JTAC reported the mission was successful. In total, coalition aircraft flew 49 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided over watch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Twenty-six Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, four Air Force and RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 140 airlift sorties were flown, 657 tons of cargo delivered and 2,856 passengers were transported. The airlift included approximately 60,000 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Iraq, Japan and Korea flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq. On July 28, Air Force, French and RAF aerial refueling crews flew 61 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.1 million pounds of fuel to 265 receiving aircraft.
